The Betrayal, Chapter 5
Lyrramari and Wildsong enjoyed their spa day, reclining on plush lounge chairs and sipping fruity drinks. The spa was a luxurious oasis, complete with a hot tub, sauna, and massage tables. The air smelled of essential oils and was filled with soft, soothing music.
"This is the life," Lyrra sighed, closing her eyes and basking in the sun's warmth. "I could get used to this."
Wildsong nodded, her blue skin glistening with hot-tub moisture. "It's definitely a nice change of pace from our usual missions."
As they lounged, a group of women entered the spa, their designer swimsuits and over-the-top hats marking them as wealthy socialites. They settled into the lounge chairs next to Lyrra and Wildsong, their conversation immediately turning to gossip.
"Did you hear about Lady Penelope's scandalous affair with the stable boy?" one of them whispered, her eyes wide with feigned shock.
"Oh, I know, it's simply dreadful," another replied, fanning herself dramatically. "And to think, she's supposed to be a pillar of society."
Lyrra couldn't help but chuckle at their theatrics. Leaning over to Wildsong, she whispered, "These ladies are something else, aren't they?"
Wildsong smirked, her crimson eyes glinting with amusement. "They're certainly... colorful."
As the socialites continued to chatter, Lyrra's sensitive ears caught a hushed conversation between two men at a nearby table. Their voices were low, but she could just make out their words.
"The package is ready," one of them said, his voice gruff. "We just need to finalize the deal with the Ashen Order."
"The Crimson Blades won't be happy if we cut them out," the other man replied cautiously.
"We have to," the first man insisted. "They're getting too greedy. It's time for a change."
Lyrra's eyes narrowed as her mind raced. This could be the break they were looking for. She stood up casually, stretched her arms overhead, and walked to the men's table.
"Excuse me," she said, flashing them a bright smile. "I couldn't help but overhear your conversation. It sounds like you're involved in some interesting business."
The men exchanged wary glances, their guard immediately up. "I'm afraid you must be mistaken, miss," one of them said, his tone dismissive. "We were just discussing the weather."
Lyrra laughed, her demeanor light and breezy. "Oh, come now. There's no need to be coy. I'm just a curious girl who loves a good mystery. And besides, I'm great at keeping secrets."
The second man hesitated, then leaned in closer. "What do you want?"
Lyrra's smile widened. "Just a little information. You see, my friends and I are looking for a new... adventure. And it sounds like you might be able to point us in the right direction."
The men considered her offer, then nodded. "Alright. But this information comes at a price."
Lyrra waved a hand dismissively. "Of course. I'm sure we can come to an arrangement."
As she negotiated with the men, Wildsong kept a watchful eye, her senses alert for trouble. She knew Lyrramari could handle herself, but they couldn't afford to trust her.
After a few minutes of haggling, Lyrra returned to Wildsong with a satisfied smirk. "Well, that was easier than I expected. We've got a location and a time."
Wildsong raised an eyebrow. "And what did it cost us?"
Lyrra grinned. "Just a little promise to look the other way if things get messy. Oh, and a bottle of their finest wine."
Wildsong shook her head, a small smile playing on her lips. "You drive a hard bargain, Lyra."
Lyrramari laughed, her spirits high. "It's a gift. Now, let's go let the others know what we've found."

The gnome walked down the hallway, banging on doors and telling everyone about the massive fire next door and the resort evacuation. The elemental sorceress Rhyianna was burning down a substantial portion of the Jade Tiger Inn over an issue related to her lost soulmate,
and management felt the need to evacuate because the resort's heat levels were rising and the roof was already smoking from the intense heat.
Tali nodded at the gnome, turned, started packing her things, and psionically reached out to the rest of her group. "Where are you with the pirates, Blaque?"
Blaquetail, as Ratty Ratonga, pulled his luggage and massive bags filled with drugs down the hall with Taala. "Wes headings to sees them quick. We's doing the deals now, then we's have our cargoes droppeds at the pick-up points."
Tali nodded, peering out the window and seeing the massive fire and column of smoke next to the resort. She cursed her bad luck and whatever this was happening next door, but she was determined to make the best of it. She reached out to Dragskarr. "Report?"
Drags "Kent" growled, peering out of a packed side hall where guests were being ushered out. He replied in his mind that the halfling he saved in the bar was a known smuggler, was thankful for the help,
and had information on a small pirate fleet arriving soon that could be carrying the hellfire weapon. Tali asked him to keep on the halfling and to be ready for the handoff.
Tali's eyes glowed as she reached out to Illia. "Where are you? The place is burning down."
"Already on our way out," Illastria thought, smiling. "Moppet is carrying my bags."
The illusionist thought it was a good thing she had such a loving doll who would always carry her bags, even though everyone around her thought it was a dog.
Tali nodded and looked for Lyrramari and Wildsong. "Last but not least, where are you?"
Wildsong's thoughts appeared in Tali's mind. "We are following the men we found out about the meeting from. They are headed to the marina, and it sounds like the pirate ships are almost here."
"Get to the marina," Tali thought back. "Find out which ship it is. Blaque and Taala are meeting the sellers, but we need to identify the buyer's ship. I will head to the roof and see if I can get eyes on the ships."
"Be careful," Wildsong thought. "We don't know how many are involved in this. It could be more than we can handle. Lyrra is helping evacuate the pirates and get them to safety." Wildsong's thoughts were calm but tinged with concern, revealing her hidden feelings for Tali.
Tali nodded. "I'll be fine. Just get to the marina and find that ship. Why are we saving pirates again?"
Wildsong replied. "They are chatty about who goes on what ship, what they are planning, and where they should all be for the deal. There is a lot of confusion in this group, and we are just two Tier hotties who don't know any better and want to get out of this place before it burns down."
Tali smiled, watching smoke rise from the next building. "Have fun with that, then." She reached out to Ratty. "Stay focused. We need the drop point. Taala, make sure you both get out alive."
Ratty's mind voice, full of his odd accent, said, "Don't worries. We's gots this under controls."
As she climbed the stairs to the roof, Tali couldn't help but feel uneasy. This mission was becoming more complicated by the minute, and she knew they were dealing with dangerous people. But she also knew that they were the only ones who could stop them. The heat from next door made her uncomfortably warm as the smoke billowed overhead.
She reached the roof and looked out over the city, her eyes scanning the marina. She saw several ships docked, but one in particular caught her eye. It was larger than the others, with a black flag bearing a red skull and crossbones. The Crimson Blades. They had found their ship.
Tali smiled and reached out to the others. "I've got eyes on the ship. It's the one with the black flag. Get there fast."

The Pirate Captain known as the Crimson Blade stood on his ship, watching the massive column of smoke billow into the skies above Freeport, and twirled his mustache. "Pity, we shall have to arrange the transfer face to face, then. I was looking forward to a week of relaxation and pampering."
His First Mate, a tough-as-nails Orc named Gorfang, grunted. "Relaxation? You call that relaxing? I'd rather be out on the open sea, cutlass in hand and the wind in my sails."
The Captain chuckled, his eyes still fixed on the burning building. "Ah, but there's something to be said for the finer things in life, my friend. A soft bed, a warm meal, and a beautiful woman to share it with."
Gorfang snorted. "Beautiful women are a distraction. We've got work to do."
The Captain turned to him, his expression serious. "And work we shall do. But first, we must secure our prize. The Ashen Order has something we need, and we have something they want. It's time to make the exchange."
Gorfang nodded, his hand resting on his sword's hilt. "Aye, Captain. But let's not forget who we're dealing with. The Ashen Order is not to be trifled with."
The Captain's eyes glinted with mischief. "Nor are we, my friend. We are being paid a lot of money to transport this cargo to Qeynos." He looked up at the burning building again, a smirk on his face. "But perhaps we can have a bit of fun while we're at it. After all, what's a pirate's life without a little adventure?"
Gorfang grunted but couldn't help the small smile tugging at his lips. "Aye, Captain. Let's show these Ashen Order dogs what the Crimson Blade is made of."
The Captain nodded, his gaze turning towards the marina. "The Ashen Order is sending their best negotiator, but I want you there, Gorfang. I have a feeling they'll try something sneaky."
Gorfang grinned, showing off his sharp teeth. "I'll be ready, Captain. Let them try."
As they made their way to the marina, the Captain's mind was already working on their next move. He knew the Ashen Order would try to double-cross them, but he also knew they had something the mages wanted desperately. And he intended to use that to his advantage. The Crimson Blade may be a pirate, but he was also a shrewd businessman who always came out on top.
A glint of gold sparkled from the sky, and he pulled out his periscope.
"There's that gold dragon again," he said, smiling as he waved to his men. "Have our three gnome wyvern riders mount up and grab the firebolt staves! Take that dragon down!"
***
The gold dragon, Nyamari, soared above Freeport, eyeing the ships and harbor below. A ship spotted her and raised a hand. Three gnomish pilots, armed with magic staves, locked on to her and kept climbing. She smiled, her brow lowering.
The first firebolts soared around her as she barrel-rolled through the storm of red-hot missiles.
"I guess it's time for a little fun," she thought as she dove toward the city streets, leading the trio of winged craft on a low-level chase that would have made an expert pilot proud.
As the chase continued, the wyverns struggled to keep up with the nimble dragon. The dragon twisted and turned, dodging the incoming firebolts with ease, while the wyverns' staves kept unleashing a barrage of attacks.
Red firebolts slammed into the city streets, sending people running for cover and taking chunks out of buildings and cobblestoned streets.
The chase passed over Captain Ashvale and the Crimson Inquisition, and they just stared at the airborne chaos.
"That is something you do not see every day." Ashvale stood motionless, unfazed by the citizens running for cover.
Ophyila flipped through her regulation books. "Why do we not have any rules for forbidden flight activities in this city!?"
Ashvale looked at her.
Gadilius shook his head. "I have no clue."
Ophyila furiously wrote in her book of laws and regulations. "Well, we DO NOW!"
Ophyila ran after the airborne battle, the Inquisition in tow, screaming at the sky, "Land your flying mounts NOW! You are in violation of a no-fly zone!"
Overhead, Nyamari was no fool. She knew she couldn't keep dodging forever, and the wyverns were closing in. With a sudden burst of speed, she pulled up and flew straight towards the nearest wyvern.
The pilot, a young gnome with a wild look in his eyes, didn't see her coming until it was too late. Nyamari slammed into him, knocking him off his mount and sending him tumbling towards the city below. The other two pilots, startled by the sudden attack, hesitated for a moment, giving Nyamari the opening she needed.
With a powerful beat of her wings, she shot skyward, leaving the remaining wyverns far behind. As she soared higher, she felt the rush of wind beneath her wings and the thrill of the chase still coursing through her veins. She glanced back down at the city below, a smirk on her face. The pirates would have to try harder to catch her.
She held the downed gnome's firebolt staff in her claw.
She twirled it in her claws, happy with her trophy.
The two remaining pilots saw her look back and gave chase. She was ready for them this time.
As they closed in, she banked right, then rolled left, breaking away from her previous direction,
leaving the two confused gnomes to pull up and look for their prey, who was long gone.
Nyamari landed in a dark alley, her golden scales glinting in the dim light. She shifted into her human form, her blonde hair cascading down her back as her emerald-green eyes scanned the area. She knew she needed to stay hidden for a while, at least until the pirate ships left the harbor.
As she made her way through the winding streets, she couldn't help but feel satisfied. She had outsmarted the pirates and their wyvern pilots, all on her own. She slung the staff over her shoulder, watched the two gnomes zoom overhead, narrowed her eyes, and smiled. She was a dragon, after all, and no one could match her cunning or her strength.
She shifted back into dragon form and gave chase, firing firebolts from the staff in her claw at the two gnome-piloted wyverns.
The gnomes screamed as they tried to dodge her attacks, but they couldn't match her speed and agility. With a swift claw swipe, she snagged one wyvern, sending it spiraling out of control and crashing into the water below. She snatched the other firebolt staff from the air and smiled, two rapid-fire firebolt staves in her claws.
She dove toward the pirate ship of the Crimson Blade, the final gnome giving chase and firing firebolts from behind.
They hit the pirate ship in front of her, splintering wood, tearing through sails and rigging,
and setting off explosions that crisscrossed the deck, sending men and shards of wood flying through the air!
She growled and joined in, the gnome stopping his friendly fire,
but her two staves streaming deadly bolts of flame directly into the oncoming pirate ship, both staves raining incredible destruction on the pirate flagship.
The Crimson Blade captain cursed as he watched his ship tear apart, his crew scattering in all directions as flames engulfed the vessel. Gorfang was at his side, his sword drawn and ready, but even he knew they were no match for a dragon's fury. One bolt tore through the main mast, snapping it in half and pulling sails and rigging down onto the flaming deck. Three bolts tore the main rigging in half, sending a barrel of explosives careening into the bowels of the ship,
where it detonated, and the sound of it rang out for miles around the harbor. Other bolts tore through the main deck, sending wood flying into the air, and crewmembers were launched through the destruction and over the ship's sides.
"Abandon ship!" the Captain shouted, his voice barely audible over the roar of the flames. "We'll regroup and plan our next move!"
As they made their way to the lifeboats, the Captain couldn't help but feel a grudging respect for the dragon who had bested him. She was a force to be reckoned with, and he knew he would have to be more careful in the future.
As Nyamari shot the final gnome out of the sky,
the gnome's wyvern slammed into the side of the Overlord's Palace behind the Jade Serenity;
she landed, shifted into human form, and walked into the resort, her two staves slung over her shoulders.
She pouted at the evacuation, wanting to at least spend some time by the pool.
Meanwhile, up at the Overlord's Palace, Lucan's advisors stood on a balcony watching the destruction.
"We should kill that dragon!" one of the Overlord's warlocks, Gedelan, screamed.
Kelessa, a Tier'dal sorceress, slapped him hard enough to knock him to the ground. "You shall do nothing of the sort!"
Geledan cursed. "Why?"
Kelessa pointed at the billowing smoke and destruction raining across the city. "Because that is an advanced-generation air superiority dragon! We need that dragon to work for us! The Overlord would be pleased if the perfect killing weapon could be convinced to work for Freeport!"
